New Scholarship for MaryJoy
We asked Leah if she would serve as our volunteer liaison in the Philippines and find potential candidates for a scholarship as a nonprofit. In 2015, Leah found three potential candidates.
After reviewing three women’s applications, we selected Maryjoy Supang, an 18-year-old woman from the Zamboaga Peninsula and a member of the indigenous Subanon.
New Scholarship for Azmina
When I was a professor of journalism in the public interest at Allegheny College, my colleague, Jolie, was raising funds for a former student. Jolie taught political science courses at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh, before joining the faculty at Allegheny. I mentioned our nonprofit to her and told her we might be in a position to offer her former student, Azmina, some scholarship support.
New Scholarship for N’tuma
Let us introduce you to N'tuma Bangura, 22, from Freetown, Sierra Leone. We are proud to offer Ms. Bangura a scholarship to attend university and study medicine. In her application essay she wrote: "It is my dream to establish a medical centre that will care for the less privileged..."
J Hatch Trio Music Fundraiser
We raised $940 this month (October) at a fund-raising party hosted by Beth Rietveld and Sam Stern at their Corvallis home. The party featured live music by the J Hatch Trio, with J Hatch on piano, Ray Brassfield on upright bass and Fred Berman on sax and clarinet. Hatch flew from Germany for the event and donated proceeds from the sale of his CD, "The Birmingham Sessions," to our scholarship fund.
Big Dreams on a Small Scale
Cheryl Hatch was interviewed by the Corvallis Gazette-Times in 2008 about the launch of her new nonprofit to support international women’s education.
Corvallis Credit Union Supports our Vision
Oregon State Federal Credit Union wrote a lovely piece on Cheryl in their newsletter, which focused on the seed idea that eventually became this nonprofit. Their Financial Services Consultant, Louise Barker, has been invaluable in helping us navigate all of the money transfer challenges we face with sponsoring education overseas. We’re happy to continue to bank with them as we continue to expand our scholarships!
